The Liberal Hall of Fame

Richard Reeves, the great liberal columnist, recently wrote a column on Pat Brown, the Governor of California from 1959 through 1966.

Pat Brown was one of the good guys; he knew that the role of government is to protect people from harm. It is obviously not always possible to protect people from harm, but it is more possible than the reactionaries would have us think. Protecting people from foreign invaders is something the reactionaries support, but protecting people from the selfish demands of the shareholders of transnational corporations is something they object to. Perhaps the day that India figures out it doesn't need highly-paid American gasbags spouting propaganda in favor of "free" trade the reactionaries will change their tune. But then it will be too late.
