The Edmund Fitzgerald
Today was the thirtieth anniversary of the sinking of the ore carrier Edmund Fitzgerald. We have Gordon Lightfoot to thank for the fact that any of us (outside the Great Lakes shipping community) remember the sinking at all. The song he wrote about it was maudlin, but nevertheless quite moving. He made the deaths of those men seem like the deaths of knights in battle. For those of us who dreamed of going to sea someday it was a cautionary tale.
