Günter Grass is still a hero

Grass remains a hero to me, both as a writer and as a moral compass; his courage, both as a writer and as a citizen of Germany, is exemplary, a courage heightened, not lessened, by his most recent revelation.

—John Irving

Grass is a great writer and a brave man. He never made a secret of his boyhood sympathies for the Nazis. That he was in the Waffen SS (in a unit that has never been accused of war crimes) does not diminish his accomplishments since then.
