A happy independence day to all my friends from India (today) and Pakistan (yesterday).
The people of India have much to be proud of. Fifty-nine years of representative government and free elections (except for that period of martial law under Mrs. Gandhi in the 1970s) is an accomplishment. I don't believe that Westminster and Whitehall expected the Indian government (or the Indian economy) to be so successful.
I only wish Pakistan had a better record of maintaining representative government and respect for human rights. They have, nevertheless, a history that includes the first freely-elected female prime minister in an Islamic country and that is something to be proud of. Let's hope a democratically-elected government is restored there soon.
